Workshop “Studying Contemporary Evangelicalism and Charismatic Christianity: Themes, Theories and Methods”

Workshop of the DVRW working group “Evangelical, Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements.”

The interdisciplinary workshop “Studying Contemporary Evangelicalism and Charismatic Christianity: Themes, Theories and Methods” will take place at the Karl Jaspers Centre from November 7 to 9, 2014. The event is organised by Junior Research Group B21 in cooperation with the German Association for the Study of Religion (DVRW).
The workshop forms the inaugural meeting for the DVRW working group “Evangelical, Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements” (in the process of founding), which intends to further academic exchange in this particular research field and bring together scholars with similar research foci from the field of religious studies and neighbouring disciplines.

The workshop starts on Friday November 7, 2014 with the first part held in English comprising keynote lectures, workshop sessions and paper presentations. This part of the meeting is open to the interested academic public. The two invited international keynote speakers are proven experts in the field of evangelical, Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity. In their keynotes, James S. Bielo (Miami University, Oxford, OH) and Simon Coleman (University of Toronto, Canada) will approach the topic in a twofold way – on the one hand addressing theoretical, methodological concerns and on the other discussing those concerns with reference to their specific research. In workshop sessions following the keynotes, both speakers will invite the participants to discuss the topics presented in more depth. In addition, members of the working group will present current research projects in short paper sessions on Saturday 8, 2014.

The second part of the meeting on Sunday November 9, 2014 is closed to the public and for members of the working group only; it will be held in German. During this meeting, conceptual and directional aims of the workgroup as well as future meetings and projects will be discussed. All members of the working group - and prospective members interested to join us - are invited to attend the closed part of meeting.

The workshop is jointly organised by Dr. Katja Rakow, Esther Berg and Matthias Deininger (Junior Research Group B21 “Transcultural Dynamics of Pentecostalism”), and Jun. Prof. Dr. Sebastian Schüler (Leipzig) and Martin Radermacher (Münster), speakers of the DVRW working group “Evangelical, Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements.”
